The governance of banks in Portugal is the theme of the next Governance Lab debate

NEWS AND EVENTS 14 Apr 2016

On the occasion of the launch of the most recent book of the research group Governance Lab on the governance of banks in Lusophone legal systems (“A Governação dos Bancos nos Sistemas Jurídicos Lusófonos”), a debate on the state of governance of banks in Portugal takes place on April 14, at 6pm, at the Auditorium of the Gulbenkian Foundation. The panel includes Fernando Ulrich, the Chief Executive Officer of BPI, Fernando Faria de Oliveira, Chairman of the Portuguese Banking Association, and Rui Cartaxo, Advisor to the Board of Directors of the Bank of Portugal. The debate will be moderated by Nicolau Santos, Associate Director of the weekly newspaper Expresso. The event will be closed by Paulo Câmara, Coordinator of Governance Lab.

The aim of this book is to try and analyse, within the context of Lusophone countries, recent developments resulting from the international advances in banking governance. The volume includes an overview, which analyses international trends concerning the corporate governance of banks, and it includes a collection of articles, organised by jurisdiction, namely  Angola, Capo Verde, Macao, Mozambique, Portugal, São Tomé e Príncipe and East Timor.

As is the hallmark of Governance Lab, the approach is a critical and interdisciplinary one, combining legal and economic financial analyses, so as to be able to contribute to future reforms in this area.

The initiatives and reflections of the authors of Governance Lab are published and can be commented on through the website www.governancelab.org. This is an independent and non-profit project, and all proceeds go to charity. The proceeds from the sale of this last book will be donated to the Portuguese Refugee Support Platform (PAR – Plataforma de Apoio aos Refugiados).
