SÉRVULO assists LUSOSPACE in sending PoSAT-2, the Portuguese satellite, aboard SpaceX
NEWS AND EVENTS 14 Jan 2025
SÉRVULO advised LusoSpace, which today launched PoSAT-2, the satellite in the ATON constellation that will be dedicated to monitoring maritime traffic. The Portuguese satellite was launched aboard Elon Musk's Falcon 9 rocket.
SÉRVULO provided legal advice on the development, design and contracting of services needed to launch the satellite.
SÉRVULO's multidisciplinary team was led by Sofia Carreiro, Partner in charge of the Commercial and M&A department, and included Ana Rita Paínho, Partner in charge of the Space Law department, Inês de Sá, Lawyer in the TMT department, Alberto Saavedra, Partner in the European and Competition department, and Catarina Marques da Silva, Commercial and M&A Lawyer.
‘Within the scope of the new Space Law practice area, it was a great challenge for SÉRVULO to lead the advice on this LusoSpace project, which is developing new areas of the space market, namely ocean monitoring,’ emphasises the team that provided the advice.
The launch took place at 19:09 (Lisbon time) from the Vandenberg space base in California, United States. Representatives from the field of space studies in Portugal and high-level organisations gathered in Lisbon to commemorate the historic milestone.
PoSAT-2, the first in a constellation of 12 microsatellites for monitoring maritime traffic, cost around one million euros and will make it possible to receive data on the location of ships via a new naval communication system, enabling vessels to receive warnings of bad weather or possible threats from pirates and to send distress messages.
