Governance Lab launches new book with global perspective on corporate governance in Lusophone countries

NEWS AND EVENTS 06 Dec 2013

On December 5 the launch of the new Governance Lab book took place at the Law Faculty of the Agostinho Neto University in Luanda. This is the first Governance Lab work that takes a global perspective, looking specifically at corporate governance in Portuguese-speaking countries (“A Governação das Sociedades Anónimas nos Sistemas Jurídicos Lusófonos”). The event culminated in the opening of the Centre for Corporate Governance in Angola, and it included interventions by the President of the Angolan Securities Commission, the Governor of the National Bank of Angola, and the President of the Centre for Corporate Governance in Angola, as well as two of the members of Governance Lab, Paulo Câmara, SÉRVULO partner, and Sofia Vale, of the Agostinho Neto University. Overall, 140 guests were present.

The book will be next launched in Lisbon on December 12, at 6 pm, in the auditorium of the Lisbon Stock Exchange. The work will be presented by Professor Manuel Ennes Ferreira, of the Lisbon School of Economy and Management (ISEG), and the opening session will be in the hands Luís Laginha de Sousa, President of Euronext Lisbon. Entry is free.

The main objective of the book is to investigate to what extent a linguistic commonality determines a convergence of solutions with regards to corporate governance. With a view to reaching this aim, the book is structured around a common matrix of themes tackled by specialists in the seven Lusophone jurisdictions taken into consideration here: Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Macao, Mozambique, Portugal e S. Tomé and Príncipe.

In each chapter the essential traits of limited companies, corporate governance models, shareholders, management and supervision are successively analysed. This sequence is preceded by an introductory chapter, which tries to detect common trends and deal with transversal links.

Governance Lab is dedicated to the reflection on and legal study of issues connected to corporate governance, striving to actively contribute to the progress of practices, recommendations and legal rules involved in this subject. The organisation is currently composed of 38 members, hailing from a number of sectors, thereby allowing for the convergence of practical experience and academic analysis. This is the sixth Governance Lab publication.

The initiatives and opinions of the Governance Lab authors can be found on the website www.governancelab.org (in Portuguese).

Governance Lab is an independent and not-for-profit initiative, all proceeds going to charity. The proceeds from the sale of this latest book will be donated to the Carmelo Hospital for sufferers of tuberculosis and AIDS in Chokwe in Mozambique, and run by the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul.
